rpf stance

mostly based on this: let people have their fun

Real Person Fiction (rpf) is a controversial topic within fandom. it tires me, to be honest. and i highly doubt real antis are gonna read this, because that would imply they know the power of nuance and changing your opinion after learning other people's views. but to make this site feel more complete i felt the need to at least include it a little bit in the whole thing.

my two rules of thumb are: what they don't know about, won't harm them & there's a big difference between fact and fiction.

in this context, the what they don't know about, won't harm them means: if me and my buddies have fun imagining two dudes having gay sex and we write about it and post it to our silly little discords or ao3, that's none of the people it's about's business. frankly, i think that me writing about them smooching each other is far less worse than tabloids making up the wildest stories and people running with it. me writing fanfiction about them does not harm their image or whatever. frankly, it's a compliment that i like them so much i'd devote hours into writing how handsome they are and whatever. and yeah if you're an anti reading this i know you have your 'but- but septiplier!' essay ready. the problem with septiplier was not the fanfics, it was the fact that the fans were sharing their imagines and whatever with the dudes in question (as far as i know, i don't look deeply into one singular example where it went wrong). fanfiction isn't for the creators, it's for the fans.

second: there's a big difference between fact and fiction. this one is very tough to understand for some people so let me spell it out for you: fact(/non-fiction) is what happens in real life, what really happens. fiction is everything anyone can imagine to happen alongside or instead of fact. it is not real. if i write hot gay sex about two irl dudes who are happily married with their wives, it says nothing about their relationship or what i think of their relationship. there once was a post that said there's three types of ships: wouldn't it be cute if these two fucked? / wouldn't it be funny if these two fucked? / wouldn't if be fucked up if these two fucked? i live by this post. me writing fiction about some dudes does also not mean i would want them to end up together (hence the funny/fucked up category).

tldr: rpf is cool as shit as long as you don't show it to the people irl and know the difference between fact and fiction
